PTCL O.N.U. (Fiber Optic) Landline Connections – An Advancement or Trouble?
PTCL (Pakistan Telecommunication Authority) introduced new technology for its landline subscribers a while. Soul purpose was to provide the customers with best of present and up coming technologies. But in a country like Pakistan, where we are facing electricity shortfall in abundance, these kind of technologies brought trouble for customers instead of providing them ease with service.
Previously, telephone lines provided to us were from old cabinets which were just directly connected to respective exchange without any aid. But in present technology, these Fiber Optic cables have modernized cabinets which need some electricity source to connect to exchange, but as mentioned earlier, these kinds of cabinets simply failed because of load-shedding.
It is said that these cabinets are provided with a special pair of imported batteries which are used to backup in case electricity goes down, as I once talked to PTCL representative, regarding this issue, he said:
PTCL has no lack of funds; it will invest wherever it is needed. The batteries provided for backup are of special kind which cost 1Lac per Pair and have a backup time of 6 to 7 hours.
But describing my experience, I face 3 times a day this situation when my phone line goes on dead with breakdown of electricity, and this is not only me, all the phone lines of my locality, from same cabinet suffer from this. A number of times we had a complaint to PTCL concerned department and to their officials but all in vane as they simply replied, SORRY WE CANT DO ANYTHING FOR THIS.
While the previous subscribers who are still on old lines have no problem like this, because that technology does not need electricity source.
Is this what advancement is? I think changes are made to bring some positive outcome using latest technology, but in Pakistan is this latest technology serving the people at their ease or it caused a lot trouble? It was electricity breakouts, then water crisis, now are we going to face this dead phone problem, where you even may not able to call in emergency, when needed?
Alas!! We Are Facing it.
Can we afford these kinds of technologies here in Pakistan? if changes are to be brought, don’t we need some preliminary setup and planning…??

LOL.even the old technology needs electricity.in Pakistan its voltage is 12 volts and outer countries its about 50 volts.how do u think the information travels.
Well that didn’t mean it work without voltage, infact that is provided from the exchange, but in the newer version of technology, source is in the cabinet. Hope this clears.
