Mobile Phone Import Decreases by 66 Percent in 2008-09
According to PTA, import of cellular handsets decease by 66 percent falling to a total of $130 million which was previously $446 million. Since the duty of Rs. 500 has been imposed by government on each handset, the grapgh has a big fall down showing the clear trend of public.
The regulatory duty applied was previously Rs. 750 which was then reduced to Rs. 500 by government. This step was likely to give impetus to the mobile industry by ensuring provision of mobile handsets at cheap rates, besides checking smuggling of mobile handsets, which was inflicting a serious loss to the government revenue.
Overall imports in 2008-09 grew by more than 20 per cent reaching to $1.7 billion in 2008-09 compared to $1.3 billion in 2007-08. Nonetheless, the telecom revenues showed a 19.8 per cent growth during 2008-09 compared to 18.2 per cent in the previous year. During the year 2008-09, the telecom sector generated revenue touching Rs333.9 billion against the last year’s Rs278.5 billion.
Reports have shown that even with the deficiency of 66 percent, this sector happened to be the largest sector of foreign direct investment by totaling an investment of $815 million in year 2008-09
