Intel Organized Science Olympiads in Sindh & Punjab
Intel Pakistan organizes Science Olympiads in the run-up to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), one of the world’s largest pre-college science competitions, to be held in May 2010. Students will present research-based projects in biology, chemistry, computer sciences, mathematics and physics. More than 750 students from all over Pakistan have submitted projects for the Olympiads.
Winners of the Provincial Science Olympiads will then compete at the National Science Olympiad, which will take place in January 2010. Projects will be assessed by a panel of renowned judges, with winners progressing to Intel ISEF.
Intel ISEF is the world’s largest science fair and the only global science competition for students in grades 9-12. In 2010, more than 1,500 young scientists from all across the world will gather to exchange ideas and knowledge, showcase cutting-edge science and compete for more than US$4 million in awards and scholarships. Next year, the event will be held from May 9-14 in San Jose, California.
“I have developed great confidence because of the countless learning opportunities I have in scientific and independent research. I won second prize in Chemistry worth $1,500 and a special prize by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. Competing at such a major level has brought out the best in me,” said Hamza Sheikh, a student at Headstart School in Islamabad, who participated in ISEF in May 2006.
“Intel has been holding the Science Olympiads for the past five years in Pakistan. We encourage students to generate original ideas, conduct research and showcase their projects to both peers and renowned judges,” explained Ashar H. Zaidi, Country Manager, Intel Pakistan. “The Science Olympiads provide an ideal platform to improve the quality of education and promote research-based learning.”
“Intel invests more than $100 million annually to promote education and technological literacy across the globe and it is heartening to note such overwhelming interest from students in the areas of science and engineering. We are appreciative of the government’s support towards this initiative, which is aimed at encouraging research-based learning in schools all across Pakistan,” Zaidi concluded.
