Dell Pakistan Selects its Tagline – Not a Professional One
Few days back we seen Dell urging Pakistani Bloggers to suggest a tag line for Dell Pakistan. A lot of people shown keen interest as we seen around 8000 fans of Dell Pakistan page on facebook. Now Dell has finally announced the chosen one, Ameera Kiran Khan – a Karachi based blogger, but the tag line is not up to the standard as per my point of view.
Exact stats are not known but Dell revealed that it got 350 plus response in first 24 hours of airing the patent. whatsoever is the exact amount, surely Dell would have had panelty of choices on received submissions.
Have a look at the line chosen.
IT’s TIME YOU GOT SOMETHING NEW. IT’s TIME YOU GOT A DELL.

Now let’s have a look at the characteristics of a tag line. (By Doctor Anna Murdoch)
- It should be memorable
- It should recall the brand name
- It should include a key benefit
- It should differentiate the brand
- It should impart positive feelings for the brand
- It should reflect the brand’s personality
- It should be strategic
- It should be campaignable
- It should be competitive
- It should be original
- It should be simple
- It should be neat
- It should be believable
- It should help in ordering the brand
- It should not be in current use by others
- It should not be bland, generic or hackneyed
- It should not prompt a sarcastic or negative response
- It should not be pretentious
- It should not be negative
- It should not be corporate waffle
- It should not make you say “so what?” or “ho hum”.
- It should not make you say “oh yeah??”
- It should not be meaningless
- It should not be complicated or clumsy
- You should like it
Adding something to above, I came to know by someone who is in the field that preferred tag line is always considered to be consisting of less than 9 words.
Now the selected tag line is surely on voting basis as per public opinion but Dell was the one bringing those five tag lines on air for voting.
To me this really is not a professional one as NO firm in my knowledge has such a lengthy tag line.
Apart from rivalry thinking and competition, Dell seemed to be in hurry for the voting as five best were chosen in a period of just one night. On that note the tag line by Omer Khan was really attractive and captivating.
A NEW DELL IS A DELL AWAY.

Whatsoever is the thinking at Dell’s end, we heartily congratulate Ameera on winning the competetion, standing first to have Dell Mini and Free Publicity for her blog in Dell’s upcoming campaign. We wish you best of your time with Dell Mini.

Good analysis and thank you for congratulating me. I agree with what you say about tag lines – they’ve got to be really catchy and preferably short too! I sent in around 40 taglines but Dell shortlisted this one as one of the finalists and it won, so this is what Dell works with now. Some of the other ones I sent in, which I liked more were:
“I like it new, I like it Dell!” (Has a beat to it, won’t pass the English grammar test but it’s a little like the slang we use today, such as “me like”.)
“Just because it’s new doesn’t means it’s a Dell.”
“Sure it’s new but is it a Dell?”
I would point out though that most liked Palwasha Minhas’s tagline, which was really good and gave me a hard time in the voting phase but it’s a little bit of a tongue-twister so it might not work as a tagline.
Oh and about the title of your post… that’s an honest opinion.
Thanks for liking the post, I really didn’t knew you can have more than one tagline, stretching it i hardly sent in 3 taglines as i wasn’t expecting 40 taglines. Thats’s really wow!
mine one was:
“Can You Dwell without New Dell”
&
“Dell Pakistan – Buidling New Dell”
But above all, this really is not a criticism on your tag line as this is not about personal pin pointing, it’s all about Dell, not Ameera.
And as far as other taglines are concerned, i must say you got luck.
Wishing you very best of luck for your future too.
No need to clarify, it always was about Dell’s tagline but winning the contest kind of puts you in a position where you feel you have to “explain” the tagline, hehe.
I just hope Dell honestly like it and that would be enough. I suppose they did like it or they wouldn’t have shortlisted it.
How did I win? Allah’s Will, no doubt. My relatives, friends, friends of friends… we all worked hard those 2-3 days. In the end, I was glad we won for the sake of all the hard work people put in for me, campaigning, etc. My vision of the world went through major revisions and learned a lot about people helping others selflessly or feeling joyous at someone else’s victory. What an experience, SubhanAllah!
Btw, my favorite tagline was the same you’ve quoted in your post.
So it does not matter who is second the one who always remembered is the First One.
You deserved to win, so you did.
rubbish i dont know how dell can select such tagline full of rubbish
IT’s TIME YOU GOT SOMETHING NEW. IT’s TIME YOU GOT A DELL.
what is it a song or a tagline??????
