No More Discounts by PTCL on Broadband Students Packages

Pakistan Telecom-munication Company Limited (PTCL) would withdraw its 30 percent discount on broadband service charges on 2 megabits per second (Mbps) and 4Mbps student packages from February 1, officials told Daily Times on Saturday.

With the end of these discounts, subscribers will have to pay additional Rs 600 on Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection of 2Mbps and Rs monthly Rs 1,500 on the connection of 4Mbps. The service charges have been fixed at Rs 2,000 and Rs 5,000 per month from February.

Officials told the company stopped issuing new connections on student discount packages on 2Mbps and 4Mbps two weeks ago. Moreover, a large number of company’s DSL users are still unaware about the decision.

They said the number of subscribers’ availing student packages on high speed broadband services are not as significant as those using 1Mbps connection with discount packages.

The largest broadband service providers have retained discount package on 1Mbps per connection and there would be no plan to terminate this package in the near future.

The broadband services have contributed a significant share in the company’s revenue in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. The broadband revenue earning leapt colossal 219 percent in first quarter of 2009-10 as compared to the same quarter of last financial year.

The revenue earned in the broadband sector has posted triple digit growth at Rs 830 million in the first quarter of the current fiscal year (1QFY10) as against the income reported from broadband segment during the same period last year. The revenue from broadband continued to grow and was more than 2 times higher than the same period last year because of increased number of subscribers’ base.

The triple digit growth of broadband segment has contributed 5.7 percent of the company’s overall revenue of July to September 2009. Revenue of the company stood at Rs 14.5 billion, 13 percent lower from last year.

There are around 564,352 broadband subscribers by the end of first quarter of the current fiscal year 2009-10. PTCL, Wateen and World Call are the major players of the market and constitute 79 percent of its share.

According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, PTCL leads the race having more than 148,000 DSL subscribers in the country.

    infact ma friend is using 2mb student package and he is un aware of it…!!!

    Same is the case with most of the people. They might have given a proper circular before doing this.
