A group of girl students from UET Lahore have won the regional competitions of Microsoft Imagine cup -Pakistan and will be representing Pakistan in the international competition to be held in Poland.

Microsoft Imagine cup is a competition held by Microsoft every year with a goal to promote innovation and “solve the worlds toughest problems”, it’s a vigorous completion which spans all year, consisting of online, regional and international  competitions held all around the word

The Project (named Magnotouch) developed by this group of aspiring girls currently in their 4th year of Engineering is a multitouch surface. The most notable among its qualities is its low cost implementation of hard ware. As explained by the contestants on their site is effectively a ‘Do it yourself project’.

That is, it can be done by almost anyone with some knowledge of computer hardware. It effectively consists of a projector, an acrylic screen filled with IR lamps and a camera modified to receive IR reflection. The concept being that the IR light reflected by the finger is detected by the camera, Which is then processed by the inboard software.

This concept has been around for some while like at instructables and maximumpc but nobody has given a serious thought to its industrial as well as education use till now.

Kudos to Team PAK Tech, our prayers are with you.

Don’t forget to vote and see the video demo on the Imagine cup site.
