When and What To Do?
- Switch off/dimm your Home/Office lights at 8:30 – 9:30pm (Pakistan Standard Time) on 26th March 2011. When you turn off your lights please take your time out to think as how you can contribute to keep this planet green.
Earth Hour is the world’s largest global climate change initiative. It’s a global commitment led by (WWF) World Wide Fund for Nature for energy conservation, climate change and global warming. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later Earth Hour had become a global sustainability movement with millions people across the world.
The rising Pakistan is one of the 128 countries to observe Earth Hour 2011. Warid Telecom in collaboration with WWF Pakistan and its business partner Singtel (Singapore Telecom, Asia’s telecom industry giant) is celebrating EH 2011 with great enthusiasm and commitment.
We all have a stake in the future of our planet and we must learn to operate in ways that don’t deplete our world’s limited natural resources. Considering our heavy reliance on fossil based energy supplies, credible economic modeling indicates we have just five years to initiate a low carbon industrial revolution before runaway climate change becomes almost inevitable. So now’s the time to take a stand and give our leaders the mandate they need to make the right climate deal.
By just being focused and taking Little Echo Steps in routine life we can make the difference, such as at home we can ensure to turn off unnecessary lights and specially unplugging the equipment that drains energy when not in use (i.e. cell phone chargers, batteries, microwave ovens, printers etc) We can also use natural lighting/daylighting when feasible and can turn off lights near windows. During summer we can close or adjust window blinds to block direct sunlight to reduce cooling needs and there can be many more green acts one can do in its everyday life to control energy wastage and reduce our carbon footprint.
