Android Phones in Pakistan! – There was a time when this statement seemed pretty odd! Well it infact did when there were no such official launches of smartphones in Pakistan. Owing to the efforts of Mobilink and HTC, we are now living in a country much abundant in smartphones.

Without any exaggeration Mobilink leads the market in subscribers’ number, hitting almost 31 million subscribers and increasing till date. Utilizing this wast market, Mobilink took initiative of launching smartphones in Pakistan and this is how the era of Androids in Pakistan started – Official Android launches in Pakistan!

Be it a smartphone or a tablet, Mobilink kept entertaining Pakistani gadget lovers and tech freaks.

Unlike others who just jammed to BlackBerry, Mobilink, in no doubt, can be termed as the only carrier in Pakistan which has provided wide range of smartphones.

Starting it from Motorola Milestone, journey never ended and finally we are here to witness smartphone guru’s devices in Pakistan, yes the HTC!

Mobilink now in collaboration with HTC has recently aimed of bringing smartphone revolution in Pakistan. HTC which is termed as one of the best smartphone leaders in the market has now started its distribution in Pakistan.

Earlier HTC HD7 was launched by Mobilink and now the company takes another feather in its cap by launching first dual core processor smartphone in Pakistan – the superphone. HTC Sensation has recently been launched in Pakistan at Bloggers Moot held by Mobilink.

To apprize smartphone developers, smartphone giant’s representatives further announced that they will soon be launching a competition for android app development and chosen apps will be included in future releases of HTC smartphones in chosen regions.

Furthermore, Mobilink should be praised here that it has utilized its resources well in bringing smartphones to Pakistan at affordable rates. Discounted prices offered by Mobilink for HTC gadgets are pretty competitive.

Not restraining it to smartphones only, Mobilink has also introduced tablets as well, for instance Galaxy Tab, so on the whole Mobilink on it end is doing a great job where others surely need to follow.

In a nut shell, Mobilink in collaboration with HTC is doing something which is highly appreciated in a country like Pakistan where a lot of tech revolutions are needed. Taking it to novel heights of technology, Mobilink and HTC are doing their best to make it Simply Brilliant!

There are a number of ways in which you can access the internet. If you don’t want to use a cable then the best option is to use a mobile wireless network. This is a very popular method as you are able to use the internet wherever you are at home and when you’re out and about if it is in a hotspot.

If you are new to using wireless then you may have a few questions or reservations. Here we cover a couple of the frequently asked questions regarding wireless, firstly home wireless and secondly mobile wireless.

1. How many computers can share one router?

It is understandable to wonder how many computers can connect to the internet using the same router. It is of course a worry if you are thinking about setting up a network at home but you are not sure about how many computers you will be able to connect up at one time. Don’t panic though.

The majority of routers advertise that they can support up to a whopping 255 devices at one time. In your own home you won’t need to worry about this, but when you are out and about, perhaps in a cafe where there is wireless, they is a chance that there could be over 225 people trying to use it. However this is highly unlikely.

2. Is it legal to use open access WiFi?

It could be easy to assume that connecting to any wireless network is OK. After all, the idea of it is to make access to the internet easier, so if you can’t get online then what is the point? The problem is though that sometimes if you manage to get on an unsecured network, even if it is open it may not actually be legal. It all depends on whether you personally have the service provider’s permission.

They will also have terms of service which can be things like, not using it at certain points in the day, having a limit on the network bandwidth that can be used. Certain activities may also not be allowed, such as visiting adult sites for example. So you can’t just borrow your neighbor’s Clear internet or whatever it is, particularly if you don’t have permission. In the US you will find that in certain states it is illegal to enter networks that are unauthorized, which could very well be the person next to you. It’s always best to check.

Muhammad Yaseen, Chairman PTA in his keynote address before the start of the day-long meeting stressed,

“Broadband is considered as the next big thing to offer a unifying services platform for three converging industrial sectors: computing, communications and broadcasting. Encouraging developments are happening in this sector since mid-2007, Pakistan has emerged as a lucrative market for broadband service providers owing to the huge potential it offers especially in the wireless broadband market. We observed a profound evolution of broadband technologies over the years with the present subscription base reaching 1.2 million from 0.1 million in 2007.”

According to United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) latest report on Information Economy Report, Pakistan is among the five dynamic economies of developing Asia in terms of increased penetration of mobile phones, Internet and broadband.

He added,

“I strongly believe that this is not the end; it is a new beginning of reaping the associated business, entrepreneurship and social benefits of this exponential ICT infrastructure. As today we are going to deliberate on potential new technologies and economic challenges, I certainly feel quite contended that this promising regime in Pakistan’s economy will continue bringing in substantial revenues and creating remarkable job opportunities.”

“A powerful telecommunications infrastructure has proved to be the key for robust growth in many countries during recent times. Over the past two decades, Pakistan has been very proactive in deploying modern technology in this arena; however the quest of delivering the next-generation of cellular services has become a complex debate for the industry.”

In the opening session on “Regulatory – Technology and Economic Challenges”, Adil Rauf, CEO, Alcatel-Lucent Technologies, mapping the future of mobile technology said,

“A radical and sustainable approach was needed to meet the eco-sustainability challenges, and announced the company’s ground-breaking mobile technology called ‘Light-Radio’ a simpler, greener, lighter network that saves in infrastructure and energy.”

In his presentation on ‘Technologies and Economic Challenges’, Arif Hussain, Chief Operating officer of Multinet Pakistan, said

“Considerations for technology, economics and opportunities must be the key element in drawing a clearer roadmap for the future of mobile technologies in Pakistan. While technologies were getting bigger, better, cheaper and faster; the investment and ROI, and stability of platform were an equally important factor.”

Dr. Tanveer ul Haq, Chief Technical Officer of Wi-Tribe and Saad Muzaffar Waraich, Country Manager, Nokia-Siemens Network while presenting in the session on

“Deployment of 3-G or 4-G Technology” revealed that the real need today was to have access to faster and reliable broadband as consumers were more inclined to video-downloading rather than data sourcing. Both were of the opinion that deployment of 3-G technology in Pakistan was long overdue and should be a priority on the government’s agenda. This session was chaired by Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, Member Technical, PTA who endorsed the view of his chairman citing the need to be cautious in its deployment.

In the session on “Information Technology, Mobile Applications” Usman Tariq of Systems Limited, the country’s oldest and one of the largest IT and ITES companies, with revenues of approx Rs.1.5 billion during 2010, said, “The key areas of mobile applications which included customized packages, mobile games, mobile websites and web-applications, business and marketing applications, were some of the development areas which need to focused on.” Citing the example of the success of mobile banking in Pakistan, Usman said that companies with the best breed of software technologies and business process outsourcing solutions were in a better position to progress in the mobile applications arena.

The conference ended on a high note in the Panel Discussion chaired by Mr. Irfan Nadeem, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Science & Technology which centered on “Global Telecom and IT Trends – the Pakistan Model”. Prof. Dr. Arshad Ali, Director-General, NUST School of Engineering & Computer Sciences and Shehryar Hyderi, Chief Operating Officer of Trango Interactive, with the active participation of delegates in the audience dilated on the need for providing R&D support to developers and small companies enabling them to compete particularly in the local gaming markets where there was scope and talent.

Shehryar’s viewpoints on the potential of the gaming industry in Pakistan drew wide acclaim and opened new doors of opportunities for the developer-community.

PTCL will be using VDSL2 Bonding technology to provide existing digital subscriber line (DSL) customers with speeds up to 50 Mbps. The project leverages Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 Bonding expertise and should be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2011.

VDSL2 Bonding takes two copper-based VDSL2 lines per subscriber and aggregates them – almost doubling the bandwidths available to existing customers, or expanding high-speed broadband access to areas that are underserved today. Using VDSL2 Bonding, service providers can extend the life of their existing copper infrastructure – supporting the delivery of bandwidth-intensive services such as triple-play voice, data and IPTV.

According to a recent study from market research firm IHS iSuppli, simultaneous access to applications such as peer-to-peer file sharing, online gaming, streaming audio, VoIP and IPTV will soon require bandwidths between 50 and 100Mbps. This fits exactly with VDSL2’s capabilities, especially when combined with innovations such as Bonding and Vectoring.

Commenting on this achievement President and CEO PTCL Walid Irshaid has stated

“PTCL is the first service provider worldwide to deploy a commercial VDSL2 Bonding solution that aims at doubling the bandwidths provided to its existing customers. We are thus setting the trend in international telecoms, and are taking the broadband experience in Pakistan to the next level. Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 Bonding technology and comprehensive services and network integration expertise is helping us to keep pace with the increasing bandwidth requirements of our customers, while capitalizing on the existing copper infrastructure. This will enable us to quickly deliver high-quality, high-speed and high-availability business and residential services – even in areas where it was not possible before.”

Alcatel-Lucent is providing PTCL with its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) IP access platform – which is the first platform to commercially support VDSL2 Bonding. Alcatel-Lucent will also supply Bonding-ready customer premises equipment (CPE). Alcatel-Lucent serves as the project’s master network integrator, and is providing a range of professional services – including project management, installation and commissioning, integration and technical support.

Aadil Rauf CEO Alcatel-Lucent Pakistan Ltd said:

“We understand that service providers need the right tools to bridge the gap until fiber deployments have become ubiquitous. VDSL2 Bonding is an ideal approach: service providers like PTCL can almost double the speeds supported by their DSL infrastructure or expand their network’s reach. This makes it a fast and cost-effective approach to bridging the digital divide. This commercial VDSL2 Bonding project with PTCL marks the beginning of VDSL2 Bonding deployments outside of the US – where the technology is typically used to expand the reach of the copper network.”

Alcatel-Lucent is the driving force behind the world’s most advanced VDSL2 roll-outs, with customers such as Belgacom, STC, Swisscom and Telekom Austria. Our VDSL2 solution has also been deployed by competitive operators, including M-net (Germany) and South Yorkshire Digital Region (UK).

“Sab Keh Do” day to promote the importance of communication will be celebrated for the third consecutive year on April 17, 2011. This year’s theme is to motivate those who have worked hard against all odds and difficulties, by expressing encouraging thoughts for them.

“Sub Keh Do” day is dedicated to create awareness about the significance of self-expression. In the spirit of recent world cup, this year’s “Sub Keh Do” day will focus on sending positive messages to Pakistan’s cricket team. “Sab Keh Do” day endorses the idea of building a stronger society by strengthening relationships.

Therefore, people will be encouraged to give inspirational messages for the members of Pakistan’s cricket team, who brought the whole nation together and evoked patriotic feelings in them.

Like previous years, an exclusive song for “Sub Keh Do” day will be aired on various channels.

Music maestro Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has recorded the song in his voice this year. Previously Shafqat Amanat Ali and Ali Hamza had lent their voices for “Sub Keh Do” day’s songs. These unique and catchy numbers became instant hits. In a survey conducted last year, many people described these songs as soothing and inspiring.

Ather Ul Islam, student of MBA at a local university, stated that he was quite impressed with the lyrics of all “Sub Keh Do” songs and is convinced that the latest one will also come up to everybody’s expectations. He added that “Sub Keh Do” day is a unique concept and is contributing to the overall wellbeing of our society by fortifying relationships.

The core objective of celebrating “Sub Keh Do” day is to uphold the importance of expressing oneself. Communication – verbal, written or gestured is an integral instinct of all living things. A lot of personal, professional and social disasters can be averted by maintaining clear, appropriate and unambiguous communication. “Sub Keh Do” day persuades everyone to speak their heart out in a respectful manner, which eventually contributes towards promoting peace, love and understanding in society.

Twitter trend is increasing in Pakistan, and the trend took new dimension when Mobilink first introduced twitter for mobile and after that Zong recently also appeared in the list. Just after Zong, Ufone also offers this service for its subscribers now though officials are unaware of this.

Signup and usage procedure is same as discussed earlier in the launch of this service by Mobilink and Zong.

We just signed up for the service and it works well, as you can send tweets, retweets and get updates for free by simply going to the profile of the user whose tweets you want to get on mobile and click the mobile updates icon.

It merits mentioning here that Ufone is currently deducting standard charges for the SMS (Rs. 1 plus tax) for each update and when asked Ufone about the charges, CSR claimed that they are unaware of this update and twitter may be showing Ufone in the list on its own but there is no update like ufone getting partened with twitter.

Though one can easily recon that Twitter only shows registered networks and now Ufone is there. Staff may be unaware of the this update yet but the matter of concern is, Ufone is deducting Rs. 1 plus tax for each tweet while it is now confirmed that Zong is offering this service as per you package plan, like if you have subscribed to SMS bucket, each message for tweet will be deducted from that package instead of your credit.

UPDATE:

After contacting ufone many a times and registering a suggestion to make it official, Ufone has finally taken step to launch this service officially. As we previously covered that all the staff was unaware of this add-on but now Ufone’s website shows this service with details as discussed above.

http://www.ufone.com/mobPro_TwitterOnSMS.aspx

And yes, Ufone is deducting Rs. 1 plus tax for each tweet, now let’s see to keep the competeion with Zong, Ufone reduces the charges or it opt for the loss of customers, though small in number, to shift to Zong!

After Mobilink, Zong becomes the second cellular network to offer Twitter updates via SMS in Pakistan. Using twitter for mobile, you can easily tweet, get updates, manage your account followers and many other features using SMS.

Earlier Mobilink offered this service back in the past and now Zong takes the step to offer this handy yet affordable service for those mobile users who are on non-edge/gprs handsets.

Price:

SMS charges are as per your package plan.

How to Activate and Use?
